Abstract
The clinical staging system for laryngeal cancer is limited as a prognostic indicator due to different biological characteristics of cancer and variable microenvironment depending on various growth factors. To determine prognostic indicators and
analyze
significant correlation with clinical stage and pathologic grade of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma, the authors studied immunohistochemical expression of transforming growth factor-¥â2 and epidermal growth factor in 30 cases of laryngeal
squamous
cell carcinoma and 6 cases of laryngeal papilloma.
@ES The results are as follows :
@EN 1) The stronger immunohistochemical expression of transforming growth factor-¥â2 was observed in poorly differentiated carcinoma. The positive rate of transforming growth factor-¥â2 expression on carcinoma showed a correlation with poorly
histologic
cellular differentiation, but not with clinical stages.
2) The stronger immunohistochemical expression of epidermal growth factor was observed in well differentiated carcinoma. The positive rate of epidermal growth factor expression on carcinoma showed a correlation with well histologic cellular
differentiation, but not with clinical stages.
3) The expression pattern and rate of transforming growth factor-¥â2 and epidermal growth factor on papilloma may be not showed a correlation of recurrence.
In conclusion, expression rate of transforming growth factor-¥â2 and epidermal growth factor reflected the histologic cellular differentiation of laryngeal squamous cell carcinomas. But, more studies are needed in many cases for using the
immunohistochemical expression of transforming growth factor-¥âand epidermal growth factor as a prognostic indicator in laryngeal squamous cell carcinomas.
More over, the quantify of immunohistochemical expression on transforming growth factor-¥âand epidermal growth factor are needed to exclude the subjectives of stains. (Korean J Otolaryngo1 39 : 6, 1996)
